Bethel Park Police Pals Safety Message
by Officer Tom Rigatti
Basic Information for parents so children are prepared to call for help in an emergency:
- Make sure your child knows how to get help in an emergency. In Bethel Park, we have our own dispatch center which you can reach directly by dialing 412-833-2000. You can also dial 911, but that takes a little more time as the 911 dispatch center gets all information then calls 412-833-2000.
- Make sure you teach the area code as well as it is required to call the Bethel Park Dispatch center.
- Practicing making an emergency call helps the child better prepare. The parent can serve as the dispatcher. Please do not actually call the emergency dispatch centers to practice.
- When calling for emergency help, a child should know 5 pieces of information:
1. the nature of the emergency
2. his or her name
3. his or her location
4. his or her phone number
5. his or her age (The operator is better able to help if the age of the child is known.)
- Discuss with your child what is considered an emergency. Is it an emergency if mom falls down the steps and can't get up? Is it an emergency if the freezer was left open and the ice cream is melting and dripping down the front of the refrigerator?
Help your child be prepared!
